Lindsay Roberts

Lindsay Roberts is an artist who takes inspiration from what she sees and feels. On her website she says:
"Textiles and paper are my favourite natural raw materials and ideas for combining them abound, ever more so since visiting India in 2012/2013..."

She makes one off artist books and likes to stitch papers by hand or with a sewing machine and often makes notebooks or albums. She also creates framed collages using papers and fabric scraps and "carefully hoarded treasures". Recently, she has also made lampshades by collaging papers and painting or block-printing them.

I first saw her work when I went to the "Art @ Ancrum" event with my mum on April 30th. We spoke to her a little about the handmade paper and she said that she buys the handmade paper from India because it is quite strong as it has fabric fibres in it so it is easier to stitch than if she had made it herself.

I think the colours and shapes in the above patterns are really eye-catching. The intersecting lines also remind me of the spiral art I am looking at for Surface Pattern.

I really like the pattern on this lampshade and appreciate how much time and effort went into producing it.

Unfortunately, I don't seem to have any photos of the piece of her work which used the handmade paper. I thought it was a really interesting piece and she had used stitching to embellish the paper which made it unique and unusual.

I would really like to try stitching my own handmade paper to see how it changes or adds to the appearance of the paper.
